Epistematica is carrying out a research project on bio-ontologies that belongs to the 8th Executive Program of Scientific Cooperation between the French Community of Belgium and Italy, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and by a local administration (Regione Lazio).

The project, named InMoBio (Integration and Modularization of Bio-Ontologies), aims to review the available literature and apply a selected methodology for integration or modularization of ontologies to the biological domain. The objective could imply the production of an original methodology, if the existing ones didn’t match the criteria for a successful application in the domain.

The project plan includes two phases: during the first phase a collection and analysis of the available literature on the organization of the biological ontologies is performed, especially addressing integration and modularization efforts. This phase concludes with the release of a “State of the art” document.
During the second phase, a research on the possibility to apply the concepts of modularization and/or integration to the biology domain is performed. For the application study probably a specific subdomain, represented by the metabolic pathways, will be considered.

Currently, InMoBio researches have developed and populated an ontology for the collection of documents of interest and the realization of the state of the art is ongoing. All the work documents are available to the public through a wiki website used for the researchers collaboration.
